Week 13 Post 1 - Ted Talk Review
Henry Romain
Original people are nonconformists who take action to champion new ideas. Originals are late to the party; creative people tend to come up with new ideas when procrastinating moderating. When someone is told they have to work on a problem, then they procrastinate, the idea incubates in the back of their mind when doing whatever distracts them. "You call it procrastinating, I call it thinking." By putting off a task, it allows more time to come up with ideas and allow worthwhile improvisation. To be original, you do not have to be first: you have to be different and better. Originals have fear of failure, but more fear of failing to try. Originals have lots of bad ideas, and the greatest originals fail the most because they try the most.
Art is all about perspective and what you want to do. People do not have to just do one thing or job, they should do whatever they want to do at the time. No one is bound to being just a painter or animator or filmmaker, someone could be all of those at some point in their life. Success is not money. (This talk was hard to take notes on because it lacked much structure and substance).
Humans tend to have a conformity bias; they will do what others do. This allows for collaborating, learning, and creating culture, but if all we did was conform then there would be no growth. Inconformity leads to innovation. Everyone is born with some creativity, but not everyone engages in deliberate creativity. Students who went through a creativity course showed immense cognitive gains. Divergent thinking is coming up with many different ideas, and convergent thinking is selecting the most promising options. New ideas are often followed by reasons why they will not work. Thoughts against these new ideas show conformity which leads to a lack of innovation. Eminently creative people have immense quantities of ideas, but are often only known for a few. The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas. Most educational efforts are convergent thinking; focusing on one way to solve a problem. If you deliberately develop and use your creative mind, you will be better suited to deal with life's complexities.

How did these TED Talks help you with both new content and planning for the presentation?
ReplyDeleteAs far as content goes, if I were to give the audience suggestions of how to enhance their own creativity these talks give me the suggestions of moderate procrastination, not being bound to one job, and being an nonconformist. I discuss the influence of my planning in the second post.
