Week 12 Post 2 - What Is The Link Between Imagination And Creativity?
Henry Romain
Creative activity aims to do something purposeful in the real world and is a reflection of a product formed from imagination. The imagined product's may have meaning by itself but has only the purpose of that which is reflected in the real world by creativity. What leads an individual to act upon imagined products to create them in the real world? Research has shown that people who are intrinsically motivated tend to be more creative. This means that individuals who engage in creative activities for their own satisfaction and fulfillment are more able to come up with original and valuable ideas. A smaller body of research suggests that prosocial motivation (helping others) may also enhance creative thinking. How do past experiences influence imagination? Research from Penn state concludes; "We might perceive something as “bad” because we got hurt or “good” because it made us laugh. These conclusions are brought on by processing the information we receive from the stimulus and coming to an ultimate conclusion after filtering the new experience through the knowledge and feelings associated with past experiences. Those with more imagination will perceive their world differently than those with less imagination as their imagination has influenced the way the way they processed their past experiences and therefore how they will experience current and future experiences as well"(Source 3). Past experiences influence imagination which influence current experiences which influence creativity.
The difference between creativity and imagination is that imagination is the formation of an image in your thoughts and creativity is the activities that bring that image into the real world. But what do people gain by doing this? Research on this topic shows that people who are intrinsically motivated tend to be more creative. This means that people who engage in creative activities for their personal satisfaction and fulfillment are more able to come up with original and valuable ideas. Other research suggests that prosocial motivation enhances creativity as well. Research from Penn State suggests that imagination influences the way we perceive experiences, which in turn influences our creativity on another level. Ca you help people be more intrinsically motivated? Can you do a quick edit and take out the specific reference to your working thesis?
ReplyDeleteI think the best way to help people become more intrinsically motivated is to ask them something like "What would you desire if money was no object" or "what would you want to do with your life if money was no object" and then tell them to go attain or be whatever their answer was. Consider the speech from Alan Watts; "What If Money Was No Object?"
