Week 11 Post 3 - Experiences Lead To Intention For Creation

Henry Romain

My reaction to my learning is that I think I can say one thing for sure about creativity: Experiences lead to intention for creation. These experiences can be life experiences (NWA experiencing police negatively) or simply artful experiences (Miles Davis listening to other musicians). This statement is consistent with what I have researched in previous weeks and is applicable to my working thesis.

A question I have regarding my research: Where do mastery and skill come in to play in intentions, if at all? Without the skills needed to create the intended product, will the product convey what it is supposed to? These are odd questions because they are very subjective.

  1. What training did Davis have other than listening and obsessing other musicians? Did the members of NWA have any musical training?

  2. Miles Davis had spent an immense portion of his life practicing to master playing trumpet (Malcom Gladwell 10000 Hours idea). The most prominent musician of NWA, Dr. Dre, did not go to music school or spend all of his time practicing an instrument, but he spent his time listening to records and frequently seeing new hip-hop artists at local clubs and gained inspiration from listening to them. He basically just figured music production out through listening to music all the time.
