Week 11 Post 1 - Intentions For Creating Based On Experience

Henry Romain

   - Prolific jazz musician Miles Davis's purpose for making his acclaimed album Kind Of Blue was to counteract an issue he saw in the music that was being created at the time. “The music has gotten thick,” Davis said. “Guys give me tunes and they’re full of chords.” The album was praised as being "exquisitely simple" and was different because it was at a relatively slow tempo and it was almost entirely improvised, putting focus on the improvisation of single notes rather than that of predetermined chords. But simplicity is not something easy to attain. "Simplicity comes only after you’ve begun to exercise mastery of your skills. Even then, it comes slowly. Miles Davis explained it best:“You have to play a long time to be able to play like yourself.”"(Source 1). Through his mastery of music, Davis was able to solve the problem he saw in music through deciding exactly what he wanted to accomplish and then doing that.

   - Rapper and author Logic wrote his novel Supermarket as a metaphor for the anxiety and mental issues he has faced in his own life. Basing it off of his experience, Logic was able to express how anxiety made him feel. He released an album with the same title as a "soundtrack" for his novel, and as for musicality (rather than message) this album was unusual by Logic's standards as it incorporated different genres of music, and he did this because he wanted to express his appreciation for different genres of music other than just hip-hop. Relating to his struggles with anxiety, Logic released a song in 2017 entitled Anziety. This song was intended to not only express his feelings about it, but to tell people who may be experiencing anxiety in their life that they are not alone and they can get better.

"This anxiety is nothing
I have anxiety
Just like you, the person I wrote this for
And together we will overcome this feeling
We will remember despite the attacks and constant feeling of our mind and body being on the edge
That we are alive
And any moments we have free of this feeling we will not take for granted"(Source 3).

   - Ice cube wrote "Fuck Tha Police" for NWA as a response to his experiences and feelings towards the police and how they were affecting his life. He stated; "You know him and Eazy were runnin' around fuckin' up, you know what I mean? (laughs) So Dre had to check himself into jail every weekend and as a teenager (laughing), weekends with Dr. Dre, you at the club, you're partying, the music is banging, you're around hip-hop -- he go to jail, all that stop -- so our weekends was boring, bunck! -- we was back on the block, we was just not doing nothing. So I was just mad that all the fun stopped and Dre had to go to jail 'till monday - so I wrote 'Fuck Tha Police', you know what I mean? Because it was like, enough is enough."(Source 4)
