Week 10 Post 2 - Experience Vs Experiences

Henry Romain

Acclaimed architect Frank Lloyd Wright had no formal education after eighth grade, instead he learned through mentors and observation of nature's ways of solving problems. Wright derived inspiration for his building designs from things as simple as a forest's canopy or the saguaro cactus's structure in order to come up with new building designs and methods of physically accomplishing those designs. When working on Fallingwater, Wright wanted to preserve the spirit of the place, and made the decision to make the house part of the waterfall, rather than a conventional building that may be next or near the waterfall. This was done in order to preserve the spirit of the place by adding to nature rather than creating a separate and foreign entity. Actor and director Jonah Hill intended for his film Mid90s to encapsulate his experience growing up in LA in the 90s, and created characters that he could relate to and that he felt other people who grew up in the 90s could relate to. His music choices for the film were based on his experiences and memory of the 90s, opting to incorporate lesser known artists like Souls of Mischief rather than artists generally associated with 90s in LA, like Dr. Dre. Jonah wanted to avoid "butchering" skate culture as he says many movies have, and he did this by hiring actors that are actual skaters and some of which make skate films themselves. This was influential in Jonah's writing and direction, he included some odd scenes that would only make sense to skaters and that they could relate to.

Frank Lloyd Wright, instead of looking to his fellow architects and predecessors for inspiration, he instead observed nature and the way various natural life showcases design and accomplishes physical feats. When designing the ceiling of the Johnson Wax Building, he incorporated the structure of a forest's canopy of leaves. The saguaro cactus' structure led him to develop a new type of column that could hold an enormous amount of weight on a narrow base. When Wright was confronted with a tough design problem, he would walk in nature because he knew nature had likely already solved the problem. When designing Fallingwater, Wright was sensitive to the genius loci (spirit of the place) and created the building in an effort to preserve that feeling. He did this in part by making the building one with nature, rather than a separate entity. This idea of preserving a feeling could be compared to Jonah Hill's direction of his film Mid90s. He created the film to encompass his experience growing up in the 90s. He created characters to represent his friends from the 90s, and their interactions are meant to invoke certain memories that people may have experienced in their own life. Jonah wanted to incorporate music that he felt were the songs of his youth, not the general public's idea of what the songs of the 90s were. Jonah took special care to avoid butchering the presentation of skate culture, and included everything that was a part of it, with no discretion for generally unacceptable scenes.

  1. Great post! How can you connect this idea of feeling in your final presentation?

  2. Maybe include images of various things like architecture or photos from films and ask the audience to consider how the image makes them feel, or if it does not make them feel anything.
