Week 10 Post 1 - Experience Vs Experiences

Henry Romain

Today I am going to emphasize my research on the influence of experience and experiences in the creative process, and illustrate the difference between the two concepts.

   - "He told us that Wright had no formal schooling after 8th grade. Wright learned through apprenticeships and often turned to nature for help in resolving complex architectural, design, and physics challenges. Wright had used the idea of a forest’s canopy, for instance, in the Johnson Wax Building’s famous ceiling. The saguaro cactus’ structure led him to develop a new type of column that could hold an enormous amount of weight on a narrow base. He said that when Wright was nagged by a tough design problem, he’d go for long walks in nature because he knew nature had already solved some of the same problems and he could learn from that"(Source 1).

   - There are varying accounts regarding the circumstances that brought Kaufmann to offer Wright a chance to design a “weekend home” in the country; but we know that Wright made his first trip to the site on Bear Run, Pennsylvania in December, 1934. Wright’s apprentice Donald Hoppen has spoken of Wright’s “uncanny sense of...genius loci”1 (Latin for "spirit of the place") and from the very beginning, the architect rejected a site that presented a conventional view of the waterfall; instead, he audaciously offered to make the house part of it, stating that the “visit to the waterfall in the woods stays with me and a domicile takes shape in my mind to the music of the stream.” The South-southeast orientation gives the illusion that the stream flows, not alongside the house, but through it"(Source 2).

   - Jonah Hill's intentions for creating his film Mid90s was to create a film to encompass his experience growing up in the 90s. The characters in the film are all people that Jonah can relate to and he feels they communicate how people acted then. His music choices were based on what he remembered the 90s as, not what most people remember the 90s as being (Souls of Mischief vs Dr. Dre). Jonah wanted to illustrate skateboarding culture in a way that didn't "butcher" it, when many other movies have in the past.
