Week 4 Post 3 - Failure and Replenishing
My reaction to my new learning is similar to how I have reacted before, this all gives words to elaborate on ideas I have observed in creative people before, especially the idea of replenishing and engaging in a variety of activities to keep yourself fresh and inspired. I observe this in artists I have mentioned before such as Tyler, The Creator. While he was originally a musician, now he also owns a fashion brand and has directed some music videos. He also posts on social media pictures of himself making art and drawings, as well as some videos of him skateboarding. Another person I see doing this is Virgil Abloh, who is CEO and creative director of high fashion brand Off-White and creative director of menswear at Louis Vuitton. When he isn't making clothes, he DJs, designs furniture, and has directed music videos. My new learning has also made me realize the importance of developing a network of collaborators and business partners as a way to advance your career as a creative, you often think of some artists just "coming up" by themselves when in reality they had to make a lot of strong connections with people to succeed.
One question I have is this: could you be a successful creative artist without experiencing failure? I have seen many popular rappers in the past years "come up" seemingly without failure. They do not immediately succeed of course, but that does not mean they have failed. These rappers are usually popular for a few months, making a living, and then seemingly vanish from everybody's radar. Is it failure to not maintain relevancy?
Did it give examples on how people can replenish? Do you have activities that you personally engage in to keep your mind fresh?
ReplyDeleteSome examples were going to a museum if you aren't a painter and going for a walk in nature. To keep my mind fresh, I have recently started to draw art when I am not working on music or anything else, because maybe when I am drawing the idea for something in music will come to me. When weather allows, I enjoy skateboarding downtown a lot because it requires me to focus all of my attention on what I am doing right then rather than thinking about what I'll do or create in the future. This allows me to feel refreshed when returning to creative activities.
ReplyDeleteGreat plan!
